Summary Flexpress offer an incredible high-gloss semi-raised Spot UV which both looks and feels great. The high-gloss finish contrasts perfectly with either matt or soft-touch laminate. Prepress: Whether or not you request a proof, all supplied artwork files undertake our rigorous 10 point file check at no extra charge to ensure your printed job turns out exactly as you intend. Files are automatically imposed ready for printing in the most effective way to minimise waste. Material: Flexpress use a substantial 400gsm premium, environmentally friendly 'A' grade, triple coated board which offers excellent properties for colour reproduction and holds fine detail well. High Definition Printing: All our business cards are printed individually using HP Indigo offset technology. You won't receive any products printed on beefed-up photocopiers from us - another reason we back everything with our total satisfaction guarantee. Laminate: Laminating adds a thin protective layer of plastic to the surface of the card giving it a delightful texture whilst adding durability. Choose from a deliciously silky smooth matt laminate or the velvety peach-like texture of luxurious soft-touch laminate. Spot UV: Flexpress were the first in the UK to install the Duplo Dusense - a digital spot UV gloss embellishment system that adds a super-glossy, slightly raised, polymer highlight to selected areas of your card. This is ideal for highlighting pictures or logos, or simply for adding a dramatic finish, or texture that instantly demands attention. The spot UV is laid on top of your choice of laminate for even greater contrast. Not sure what your Spot UV design will look like? Why not test it first with our completely FREE embellished print test serivce.
Precision Finishing: Business cards are cut using our Duplo DC646 automated cutting machine - accurate to just 0.2mm. This ensures clean edges and even cards with tight borders are cut accurately. FAQs - Raised Spot UV Business Cards
What is the best size for a spot UV business card?
The most common size for a business card, by far, is 85mm x 55mm in landscape format. Of course you can vary from this size in order to stand out but you should consider that bigger is not always better when it comes to business cards as there are considerations like: will it fit in standard packaging or business card wallets? Some companies vary slightly away from the standard size working on the basis that once your artwork is prepared, having an unusual size will tie you into their service but we believe that in the case of business cards, sticking to standard is best.
Are Spot UV business cards still relevant?
With apps designed to transfer contact data and the likes of LinkedIn replacing physical networking some people argue business cards are no longer necessary but just as with any sort of printed marketing materials you can't replace the appeal of having something physical to touch and hold. In addition, your card presents an opportunity to differentiate your business and impress a prospect with both it's design and presentation. In 2020, a year of National lockdowns, Flexpress sold more business cards than ever before and we put this down to the realisation that you can't beat the impact of a printed card; particularly when it's embellished with a seductively tactile spot UV!
What's the most popular thickness for a Spot UV business card?
Once again there is the mindset in some quarters that the thicker the card, the better but we'd disagree which is why we, along with the vast majority of printing companies feel that 400gsm is the perfect weight and thickness for a business card. Lighter card feel cheap and flimsy but heavier feels like you're holding a piece of wood as opposed to a card. We believe that a perfect business card should be heavy enough to feel impressive but flexible enough to bend when in someones pocket or wallet and 400gsm best suits this criteria.
Can I have spot UV on both sides?
Yes, you can select to have our raised Spot UV on either one, or both sides of your card.
What's the best material and finish for a Spot UV business card?
The best material and finish for our raised Spot UV business cards is our 400gsm silk with a soft-touch laminate. Soft touch laminate contrasts perfectly with the high gloss finish of the spot UV and provides the perfect base onto which the polymer UV can adhere. Our standard matt laminate also works well but it's best to stick with soft-touch if your Spot UV design bleeds off the edge of the card as the matt laminate doesn't provide quite the same adhesion and it can chip at the edges.
How thick is your raised spot UV?
Using our incredible Duplo Dusense, we can go as thick as 80 microns (0.8mm) which is just below the level of braille but this can present 'filling in' issues on some designs and fine text. To keep life simple, our operators will run your job at the thickest setting they believe will achieve the best result. In any event, you'll always be able to 'feel' the benefits.
Is your spot UV very glossy?
Measured up to 104GU (Gloss Units) it's the highest rated glossiness from any spot UV available on the market.
How do I get the best results using raised Spot UV?
We've seen some fantastic effects where spot UV has been used to create a pattern over a dark background and where it's been used to subtly highlight logos and text but we've also seen some examples of it not working so well. This is why, unlike any of our competitors, we give you the option to test your own raised spot UV design completely FREE OF CHARGE.
Does Spot UV register with my design?
We use special registration marks which are recognised by a camera on the machine. This then adjusts the spot UV position to perfectly register on the print. Unlike other methods, even hairline register is perfectly achievable.

We would always recommend using Adobe InDesign or Adobe Illustrator to create your artwork, with the easiest way being to download one of our templates above and use that as your base. When exporting your file as a PDF, please ensure you select 'Press Quality' in the output settings, and ensure you have 3mm bleed and trim marks. We work to FOGRA39 colour standards too, so please ensure you are using that colour profile.
