Spiral Bound Books - More Info

Summary:

Plastic spiral bound books offer a safe, practical alternative to wire-o binding allowing the pages of the book pages to lay completely flat, or even turn back on themselves. This makes this the perfect style of bind to choose for notebooks and manuals; particularly in situations where using wire would be considered less safe.

Material:

Flexpress offer a wide choice of cover options and several weights of uncoated and silk papers for wire-o bound books. Uncoated papers are by far the most popular option for the pages in this kind of book as it facilitates the easy use of pens for making notes.

High Definition Printing:

Every job at Flexpress is printed using the finest technology available. You wont receive any products printed on beefed-up photocopiers from us - another reason we back everything with our total satisfaction guarantee. This product is printed either lithographically using LED UV inks or using HP Indigo which is arguably the finest digital technology available.

Precision Finishing:

Spiral binding manually is a relatively slow process so to ensure we meet challenging deadlines, Flexpress use automated punching machinery and electric coil winders which dramatically speeds up the binding process. All books are bound in your choice of  spiral colour with the ends of the spiral turned in to prevent pages falling out. As with all our products these books are packed in extra-strong, double-walled, unbranded cartons that will stand up to the rigours of national carriage.

Lamination

Covers are available with your preferred choice of gloss, matt or soft-touch laminates.

FAQs - Spiral Bound Books

What's the best: wire-o binding or plastic coil binding?

Both offer similar results enabling the pages not only to lay flat but turn back on themselves a full 360 degrees but wire-o, in our opinion, looks more professional. The lay-flat properties are the main reason people choose either of these binding methods. It's personal choice, of course, but commercially, wire-o tends to be more common; particularly with training companies whereas educational establishments tend to prefer plastic coils. Anywhere safety is a concern, plastic coil is preferred as the wire can be pulled out, straightened and used for other things than its intended purpose.

I've had spiral bound books where the spiral simply winds off the pages. Is this common?

Not if the book was bound properly. The ends of the spiral should be crimped (turned in) which makes it more difficult to wind the spiral off the book pages.

What types of book are best suited to spiral binding?

Spiral binding suits manuals, notebooks, recipe books; in fact any book where it's helpful to be able to read or write without the need to hold the book and where a wire may not be suitable for safety reasons.

How is the bind formed?

The pages are gathered together and punched with a series of holes to the bound edge of the book. The plastic coil is then wound through the holes, trimmed and crimped to form the bind.

File Set-up Information
We would always recommend using Adobe InDesign to create your booklet artwork, with the easiest way being to download one of our templates above and use that as your base. When exporting your file as a PDF, please ensure you select 'Press Quality' in the output settings, and ensure you have 3mm bleed and trim marks. We work to FOGRA39 colour standards too, so please ensure you are using that colour profile.

For Spiral Bound booklets, please ensure your pages are supplied in 1 file, in running order as per this sample PDF.
