Case Bound Books - More Info

Summary:

There's something special about getting a book in print. It gives the author the power to inform and influence, educate and entertain which is why they're just as popular now as ever. Our case bound books, otherwise known as 'hard back books', or 'hard-cover books', have a paper-over-board rigid cover that gives a book a definitive feeling of substance and quality.

Before we go to print:

Our pre-press department are expert when it comes to making sure your files are good to print. Whether or not you request a proof, they will run your artwork files through a rigorous 10 point check, testing for all the common problems we encounter and ensuring they're fixed before they're printed, ensuring your printed job turns out exactly as you intend.

Book Cover and Cover Finishes:

Please note: the sizes stated are for the inner pages of the finished book. As is standard for case-bound books, the actual cover size is few millimetres bigger all around.

The book cover (otherwise known as the 'case') is made from 2000 micron (2mm thick) greyboard enclosed within a printed paper cover. We recommend one of our laminated finishes to add additional protection to the book; though do have a non-coated, non-laminated option if required.

For the inside pages, natural uncoated paper with no reflection or glare is ideal where mainly black and white text and illustrations are dominant such as novels, poetry books, autobiographies and colouring books. Natural uncoated paper can also be easily written on making it perfect for text books. Otherwise if you want vivid colour photographs and fine detail to look their best, such as in photo-books, catalogues or brochures, we'd recommend one of the coated grades of paper such as silk or gloss.

Enhanced Finishes:

By choosing our most luxurious soft-touch velvety finish you can also add 'impossible-to-resist-touching' special effects to your cover such as raised spot gloss highlighting and raised metallic foils. These seductive enhancements really help to make your book cover stand out.

End Papers:

Books come as standard with plain, unprinted, white end-papers (the inside cover and first sheet). Printed or coloured end papers are available by requesting a custom quotation for quantities over 250 copies.

High Definition Printing:

Every job at Flexpress is printed using the finest technology digital and lithographic technology available. You wont receive any products printed on beefed-up photocopiers from us - another reason we back everything with our total satisfaction guarantee.

PUR Glue Perfect Binding:

The inner pages of the book are glued into a book block using PUR (Polyurethane Reactive) glue for it's superior adhesion and lay flat properties. The process involves 'roughing' the spine of the book block enabling the  glue to penetrate into the fibres of the paper which ensures a strong, bind with anti-pull out qualities up to 70% better than traditional EVA glue. The case (or hard cover) is then glued to the end papers to give a finished book.

Dispatch:

Use the countdown timer to ascertain when your job will be dispatched. You can choose to have the job dispatched faster by selecting the 'Express' option, and paying a little more, or alternatively, if you're not in a rush, save a few pounds by selecting the 'Saver' option

All orders are dispatched using reputable national carriers on a standard next working day service. This will require a signature and will usually arrive by 5pm although please be aware that once goods have left our premises we have no direct influence on exactly when they are delivered.

FAQs - Case Bound Books

What is case-binding?

Case binding is when a hard cover is added to the inner pages of a book. The hard cover itself is known as the 'case'.

Is the page size, or the cover size the finished book size?

The page size is classed as the size of the book so if you select an A4 book, that would be the size for the inner pages. The cover is always slightly bigger.

How much bigger is the cover?

Usually 6mm taller and 3mm wider. The cover protrudes from the inner pages by approximately 3mm at the top, the opening edge and the bottom.

What are end papers?

End papers are the folded sheet of paper that is fixed to the inside front cover and attaches the inner pages to the book.

What material do you use for end papers?

Unless you have specifically requested otherwise, we use a paper to match your pages so if your inner pages are silk, we use a 170gsm silk for the end papers, if your pages are gloss we use a 170gsm gloss and if you choose uncoated paper, we'll use a 150gsm uncoated.

How are the book pages bound?

We bind the inner pages using PUR adhesive which is the same glue used on our paper back books and very strong.

How thick are the covers?

We use a 2000 micron (2mm thick) grey board and wrap this with a laminated 170gsm printed paper.

Can I have anything other than a printed paper cover? Leather, for example?

Not at present. We only bind using a paper-wrapped case.

Do you do sewn book sections?

When books were bound using weaker, EVA hot melt glue, sewn sections added additional strength to stop the pages falling out. PUR Binding, however is much stronger and the pages are hard to pull away from the book without the need for expensive sewn sections.
